Thanksgiving With Fluffy

Thanksgiving With Fluffy

Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away! It’s always nice to slow down and relax with family and friends over some mouth-watering seasonal food, and reflect on the things we are grateful for. Cats are definitely on the list of things we are thankful for. Actually, Fluffy may have a few plans of her own for the autumn holiday! Read on as a Sayville, NY vet discusses Thanksgiving with cats.

Food

Fluffy can definitely have a special treat. You can offer your kitty some of that delicious turkey, as long as the skin, bones, and fat are removed. Your furball may also enjoy a can of tuna in water, or some shredded deli meat. Just be sure to only offer your cat plain, cooked foods, without gravy, toppings, or seasonings.

Naps

Fluffy won’t let anything get in the way of her beauty rest. If your pet is a friendly, sociable type, she may very well curl up on some of your guests laps for naps. (A word to the wise: if you have visitors put their coats in a spare room, keep that door closed. Otherwise you’ll likely find your drowsy pet snoozing on somebody’s jacket!)

Grooming

Don’t be surprised if Fluffy plops down in the middle of a room full of guests! Cats aren’t exactly known for being demure about their beauty rituals. You may want to give your pet a good brushing before the holiday, however. This will reduce the amount of fur and dander she sheds. Vacuuming and dusting is also a good idea.

Hazards

Many popular holiday foods are toxic to kitties, so be careful with what you offer your feline buddy. Some dangerous foods include garlic, onions, and chives; meat on the bone; dairy; and raw meat, yeast, or dough. Candles and fireplaces are also a hazard. Keep candles in high, secure spots, and use protective grates on fireplaces.

Guests

Do you have a timid kitty? If so, make sure Fluffy has a safe hiding spot in every room, whether it’s a kitty condo, pet tent, or just a spot under a couch or bed. You may also want to consider putting your furball in a quiet back room with food, toys, a litterbox, and comfy bedding, so she can catch up on her beauty rest.
