Fido’s First Year

Fido’s First Year

There’s a super cute doggy holiday coming up. March 23rd is National Puppy Day! It goes without saying that puppies are one of the most adorable things on the planet. They’re also one of the most mischievous! Read on as a local Sayville, NY vet discusses that crucial first year.

Veterinary Care

Your canine pal will need to see us a few times while he’s still a puppy. We recommend that all dogs be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on vaccinations, exams, and parasite control. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Food

Your four-legged friend will grow very quickly during his adorable toddler phase. Proper nutrition is absolutely crucial at this stage of your dog’s life! Offer little Fido a high-quality puppy food.

Playtime

Make sure little Fido has plenty of safe, suitable toys, and take time to play with him every day. This is one of the best parts of having a puppy!

Petiquette

Nip bad habits—like begging and jumping on people—in the bud. Never punish your pooch for misbehaving: this may just confuse or frighten the little guy. Instead, focus on rewarding good behavior. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Training

Your furry buddy will have lots to learn in that first year. Crate training and housebreaking should both start right away. You’ll also want to teach your four-legged pal basic commands. The five most important ones are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Work on one thing at a time, and don’t move on from a command until your pooch has mastered it.

Socialization

Socialization is crucial to your dog’s mental and emotional development. You’ll need to expose little Fido to friendly people and gentle, well-behaved dogs while he is still little. This will help him form a positive opinion about the world. Take your pup to a park, or invite friends or family members with gentle, friendly dogs over to play with the little guy.

Tail Wags

While there is a lot of work involved in puppy parenting, especially in that first year, there are also lots of rewards. Tail wags and snuggles from puppies are truly precious gifts! Savor this cute time in your furry friend’s life. Fido will be all grown up before you know it!
