Common Cat Care Mistakes

Common Cat Care Mistakes

There are definitely many things to love about cats. Fluffy is cute, lovable, funny, and clean. She’s also quite easy to care for. However, our feline pals are not always as independent as they would like us to think. Fluffy needs good care to stay happy, healthy, and purring. Here, a Sayville, NY vet lists some common cat care mistakes.

Letting Fluffy Roam

We know, many kitties really enjoy chasing butterflies and rolling around in the grass. However, Fluffy will be much safer living indoors. Cats that go outside face some very serious dangers, such as cars, weather, chemicals, and wild animals. They’re also more likely to contract parasites or dangerous viruses, and/or to get lost, hurt, or even killed.

Lack of Stimulation

Fluffy certainly does love her beauty rest, but even the drowsiest kitty can’t sleep all the time. Your pet will grow bored and restless with nothing to do. Keep your furball entertained and purring by providing her with cat furniture, fun toys, and interesting views. We also recommend playing with your cat every day. This will keep her active and provide beneficial mental stimulation. Plus, it’s super cute!

Not Enough Veterinary Care

Many of our feline patients don’t see us as often as they should. Fluffy should be microchipped and spayed or neutered as a kitten. It’s also important to keep up with your cat’s exams, vaccinations, and parasite control. At home, watch for potential signs of illness. If you notice anything unusual, don’t wait! Cats often don’t show signs of sickness until they’re quite ill.

Dirty Litterboxes

Cleaning litterboxes isn’t the best part of having a kitty, but it is very important. Unchanged litterboxes can harbor dangerous bacteria. Plus, if Fluffy’s powder room is too dirty, she may avoid it. Cats hate dirty bathrooms, and who can blame them?

Lack of Kitty Comforts

Fluffy won’t mind borrowing your sofa and bed, but she really will benefit from having things made just for her. Cat towers are great! It’s also important to make sure your furball has a suitable scratching post.

Negative Reinforcement

Cats may be adorable, but they aren’t purrfect. However, you should never punish Fluffy for misbehaving. This could backfire, and leave her feeling frightened or angry. Instead, focus on rewarding good behavior.
